The Slip...

Mon May 5, 2008, 2:02 PM
  • Mood: Rage
I cannot help but feel a little crushed.

The Coil Of Sihn has been offering free versions of the albums since inception, online or physical.

So, Radiohead and NIN will go down in history as the pioneers. And the rest of us independent artists will never reap the rewards because, we don't have big PR firms, we don't have a lot of money, we don't have the eyes of the media on our lily white asses.

But, independent artists like us made it possible for Radiohead and NIN to do this. We slogged it out in the trenches and posted our links on every blog we could find. We joined organizations like CD Baby to get digital distribution for a pittance of remittance. We mailed out thousands of our albums, that we handmade in our basements on crappy printers and cd burners. But, will we get any credit. No.

NIN may be giving the middle finger to the music industry but, NIN is a corporation, just like Coke or Pepsi, by itself.

As Trent's finger extends, his ass shits on the little guy.

How about letting all of us on your Nothing, bitch.

Meanwhile, we will keep slogging through this hell because, we do this to edify and Love those that we were destined to touch. Our performance stages are close enough to the ground that we can actually touch those who need the healing, the camraderie, the comiseration or the fun. I will never stop doing what I am doing. I can't.

Well said. You have it better, you know. Just re-read that last paragraph. Never stop for all of us little supporters out there.

Did you try asking?

:iconsihnstarr:
Yes.

I asked Trent.
I asked Marilyn.
I asked Metropolis.

When I released my second album, I mailed three special packages to three record companies. They were not the only ones but, they got special treatment. In point of fact, the total mailing was two hundred and seventy-two. Labels, magazines, radio stations; major, minor and in between.

The three special packages were hand crafted coffins, made from acacia wood, painted in gloss black. They were eighteen inches long and five inches wide with metallic accents, just like the real deal. Inside, the coffins were padded with hand quilted red, crushed panne material. Also, they contained the pieces of several toy dolls which were tattooed with artwork and poetry. The lid of the coffin was so constructed as to pull the arms of two of the dolls, fixed to the bottom of the casket, to raise the cd up to the opener in an action of offering and supplication.

Now, one would have thought that with so much effort put into these three special packages that a response would have been sent.

No response has ever been recieved.

I imagine that they sit on, under or near a demo table at Nothing, Posthuman and Metropolis, gathering dust, as piles and piles of other hopefuls are added like rock strata over it.

You see, every record label has the same policy. Unsolicited work gets treated like it is made of radioactive, toxic waste. If I knew the guy who fucked the girl who writes down the stuff for the guy who washes the windows of the office manager who is sleeping with the agent that deals with them, then I might have a ghost of a chance. Unsolicited work is a lawsuit risk. If Marilyn, or Trent or any of the artists on Metropolis wrote a song that sounded like mine or used lyrics like mine, I could sue.

It is not enough to ask.

You have to prove you are safe to the other apes by having one bring you in.

This is easy for some. Difficult for most.

I have found that you do not need to ask them. You just keep moving forward. Never stop.

I just wanted to make a statement in the consciousness before those at INSOC sterilized the records.

Thank you.

I cannot.

I am surrounded by a circle of people who will never allow me to quit. They are with me through all.

And those outside the circle, in the outer world who can hear my screaming, have the same demand.

You are not little.

It's interesting that they react that way, though I do understand the liability issue.
Thank you for taking the time for the detailed response, by the way.

Interestingly, I've been listening to you longer than I have been listening to Trent.

And by the way, if you ask me, half of The Slip is shit anyway.

Trent appears to be attempting to create a new kind of market for music, and he has the influence and power. The RIGHT thing for him to do would be to reach out as much as possible to bring new artists into that world.
He recently "helped" "Niggy Tardust" in that way, and I don't know what Trent sees in that music at all. Your music is real, your lyrics are real.

At any rate, perhaps it is, in fact, better that you not rise to be such a huge thing. At that point, profit overtakes message and music loses purity.

Also, when I sent the one-line response, I hope you knew that I meant no offense, I was just asking :)

I totally knew that you meant no offense. I knew you were genuinely asking so, I had to answer.
